TIDAL INTERACTIONS AND MERGERS AT EARLY COSMIC TIMES

Using panchromatic data taken with the HST Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) as part of the Galaxy Evolution from Morphology and SEDS (GEMS), and the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS), we present a study of the strength and rate of tidal interactions and mergers at different redshifts. The implications for the decline in cosmic SFR density from z~1 to 0, the fueling of starburst/AGN activity, and the mass assembly of galaxies are discussed.
