Date: Thu, 6 Dec 2001 17:38:25 +1100 (EST)

Dear Colleagues,

        Attached you will find information about a workshop entitled
"Chandra Data Reduction" that will be held at the University of
Tasmania, Hobart on 21-22 Feb. Please bring this meeting to the
attention of anyone who might be interested, including overseas
visitors. This is part of a series of meetings supported by the MNRF
International Collaboration committee. We are seeking to foster the
growth of an X-ray astronomy community in Australia. Students are
especially encouraged to attend, and there is a limited amount of money
for assistance.

A poster has been sent out to all groups and departments, a copy of
which is at http://www-ra.phys.utas.edu.au/~cws/cws-poster.pdf

More information is available on the Web:

                A Chandra Data reduction workshop

      U. of Tasmania, 21-22 February 2002, Hobart, Australia

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Overview

We are running a two day school on how to use the Chandra X-ray telescope.
We intend that this workshop will also foster the growth of an active X-ray
community in Australia. The school will cover the procedure of data
reduction, access of the archives and the requirements for proposals.
People should come to the workshop with a Chandra object(s) in mind that
they would like to analyse.

Goals

  1. To cover the mechanisms of X-ray production
  2. To explore overlaps with Australian resources
  3. To master data analysis for Chandra observations
  4. To encourage collaborations on proposals for the next observing season.

Speakers

   * Eric Gotthelf, Columbia
   * Paul Nulsen, U. Wollongong
   * Andrew Melatos, U. Melb.
   * Richard Dodson, U. Tas.

Tentative Program

   * Thurs 21 Feb: Day 1

                 bands.
     11:00-11:30 Description of Chandra.
     Tea
     12:00-1:00 Instrumentation; response functions in position/energy and
                time.

     Lunch

     1:30- General session, with about 15 mins per proposal. How to do it
           better, & what else you need to think about.
     Tea
     Whenever-onwards Practical data reduction.

     Requirements

       1. Student participation will be favoured. There are limited funds
          for assistance.
       2. Suggestions for interesting data sets from the archive are
          encouraged
       3. We will have a session in which we will discuss potential
          proposals. All participants are encouraged (but not required) to
          have drafted out a proposal for the Chandra telescope. These will
          form the basis of the discussions on day two. Assistance will be
          given to strengthen and clarify these proposals.

     Accommodation will be organised once numbers are known.

     If you wish to attend please complete the online registration form.
     Some small registration fee maybe required, to cover unforeseen costs.
