Subject: Source detection service

At Pitt we have put together a webservice, WESIX, that may be of
interest to people working with the SDSS images (or in fact any image
analysis). WESIX bundles Sextractor, openskyquery.net, VOplot and Aladin
to provide a utility for source detection and visualization. It can be
accessed as a webservice or through the web client interface.

WESIX allows a user to upload an image (with a valid WCS such as the
later SDSS images). It will then identify sources on the image using
SExtractor and cross-match those sources with catalogs available through
openskyquery.net (e.g. SDSS, 2MASS, FIRST, NVSS etc). Results are
returned in three separate catalogs: matched sources, SExtractor sources
and catalog sources that overlap the image. The catalogs are returned in
VOTable format (but in a form that is readable with a browser).

Comparison of the SExtractor and catalog outputs is available through
VOPlot (for scatter plots) and between the input image and catalogs
through Aladin (e.g. to overlay the position of the sources on the
image).

You can find the webservice with links to sample images at

http://nvo.phyast.pitt.edu/wsext

A tutorial on how to use it is available at

http://nvo.phyast.pitt.edu/wsext/soon.jsp

If you try it out we would be very interested in any feedback.
