Re: ATNF observatories connected at 1 Gbps network (fwd)

Hi all,

On Tuesday (14/3/06) we achieved first (user) light on the 1 Gbps network
connection from Mopra to the ATNF headquarters in Marsfield (Sydney). On
Wednesday both the ATCA and Parkes were also connected up.

At all 3 observatories we have achieved > 900 Mbps data transfer rates
(TCP/IP) back to Sydney. As an initial "eVLBI" test we also streamed
baseband data directly from the ATCA and Mopra to a disk in Marsfield at a
sustained rate of 256 Mbps (512 Mbps total) for over an hour. During this
transfer we also sent a few seconds of data to the Swinburne University of
Technology to process on the MNRF-funded software correlator running on a
supercomputer, in order to confirm data integrity (ie we got fringes!).

Over the next few months, we will be implementing eVLBI using software
correlation and links to Swinburne University and the University of
Western Australia.

Please realise the broadband links are *not* yet commissioned so keen data
transferrers will be limited to the current slow links for the moment.

Many thanks to Shaun Amy for the great effort he has done getting this
whole network together. Also, thanks to our colleages at AARNet, Cray,
CENTIE, UWA, and Swinburne for their contributions to the eVLBI project.

Regards
Chris
