Subject: The first light for NZ 12m Radio Telescope

Dear All,

We had the first light today for our 12m RT. Tim Natusch and I
observed several brightest sources (Taurus, Cen A, Sgr A, Vela X,
etc.) in S-band. It became possible after Tim finished building and
testing the S-band receiver. We've started collecting data for the
pointing map. First observations show that in general pointing is not
too bad - Elevation is OK, but it probably requires little correction
in Az (about a half of the beam). We need more data for different Az
and El to run the least square method to get reliable results for
pointing model coefficients.

The telescope is great! It's a pleasure working with such a fast
machine (5 deg/s in Az).

It is a great event for us and it's the result of a big team effort.
We would like to thank everyone who designed, built and installed our
telescope - all Patriot people. Massive thanks to our colleague in
Australia (and certainly Tasmania!) who always supported and helped us
tremendously, many thanks to everyone in our Institute (including our
postgrad students) and to all people in AUT who helped us to make our
dream of the first "real" radio telescope in NZ come true.
