Dear LBA-ers,

Any interest? I see strong responses from Jive and a couple of other places.

Cheers,

Dave

Subject: Proposal for VLBI at MeerKAT

Dear all,

I am contacting you in order to gauge your interest in joining a VLBI
proposal for MeerKAT, the South African SKA pathfinder. The call for
proposals can be seen here: arXiv:0910.2935 (Booth, de Blok, Jonas and
Fanaroff).

The goal would be to secure a significant amount of MeerKAT observing time
dedicated to VLBI. The observing time is required first to make the
necessary test-observations so that we will be confident that
MeerKAT can function as an element in a VLBI array, and of course to do
all the great science that is possible with VLBI.

MeerKAT will have 80 dishes of 12m each, most in a concentrated core of
diameter ~1km, and some with baselines out to 6km, and eventually a
smaller number out to 80km. Once phased up, the collecting area will be
equal to that of a ~100m dish (even if only the 1-km core is used, the
equivalent diameter will be ~90m). Some development work will obviously
be required, chiefly to interface the data-flow with a VLBI or eVLBI
system, and to interface the telescope control with the VLBI scheduling
systems.

Anyone who is interested and is likely to be able to contribute at some
stage is welcome to join this proposal. Let me know if you would a) like
to be co-investigator, b) are unsure but want to keep getting emails or c)
or if you are not interested.

Time is relatively short - the deadline for proposals is 2010 Mar 15. I
hope to send round a skeleton proposal at the latest by Mon, Mar 1.

  yours, Michael Bietenholz
