DST/NRF RESEARCH CHAIR / ASSOCIATE CHAIR IN RADIO ASTRONOMY

UNIVERSITY OF THE WITWATERSRAND, JOHANNESBURG FACULTY OF SCIENCE

SCHOOL OF PHYSICS

We invite applications for a research Chair in Radio Astronomy, which was
awarded to the University of the Witwatersrand as part of the South
African Research Chairs Initiative in the Square Kilometer Array. This
Chair is hosted by the School of Physics, and co-hosted by the
Hartebeesthoek Radio Observatory (HartRAO). The Chair can be taken at the
Associate Professor level or at a full Professor level, depending on
qualifications, experience and research record of the candidate. Very
generous research funds, including running expenses and studentships, are
associated with this Chair

Current research fields in the School include theoretical high energy
physics, theoretical particle phenomenology and experimental particle
physics. The School hosts the DST/NRF Chair of Fundamental Physics and
String Theory and the Gauteng node of the National Institute for
Theoretical Physics. The DST/NRF Chair of Theoretical Particle Cosmology
is being filled. The School is also currently involved in several joint
initiatives with HartRAO.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates who will lead a vibrant high quality
research program in Astro-physics and lead the School's involvement in the
MeerKAT radio telescope science program. Areas of research where the
co-hosting by HartRAO would be an advantage are: pulsar and transient
radio sources, high resolution studies of radio galaxies and molecules and
masers, although applicants with other research interests will also be
considered. A PhD and an excellent publication record with evidence of
independent research are essential. Experience in post-graduate
supervision will be an advantage, as post-graduate supervision is one of
the key expectations of the Chair incumbent. The rank of the appointment
and final selection will be made on the basis of scholarship and
potential to contribute to the work and reputation of the School.
