Super Science Fellowships in VLBI Geodesy and Space-based Geodesy - University of Tasmania
The University of Tasmania, School of Maths and Physics has two Super Science Fellowship positions available in space geodesy. The positions both focus on making key improvements to the definition and realisation of the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF), and will be involved in using the AuScope VLBI and GNSS arrays, plus data from various International space geodesy agencies including the IVS, IGS and ILRS. Each position is full-time for a period of three years, to start before the end of 2011.
One position is directed primarily to VLBI geodesy / astrometry, the other is directed primarily toward analysis of multi-technique space geodetic data. Both Fellows will play key roles in collaborations involving major Australian institutions and international partners. The broad goal of the project is to mitigate a range of systematic error sources that degrade the reference frame and its subsequent geophysical applications. The project aims to produce an improved reference frame as well as a series of new interpretations for studies related to regional tectonics, hydrological loading and effects of global climate change.
The Fellows will also conduct personal research using the AuScope VLBI array and other sources of astronomical, geodetic and geophysical data. Applicants must provide a 3 page coherent and competitive research plan to use the AuScope VLBI array and space geodetic data for a program of scientific research. The Fellows will lead and coordinate international scientific teams, and travel to present research results at national and international conferences.

The closing date for receipt of applications is 31 January 2011
The appointments will be Academic Level B with total remuneration package up to $103,088 per year (comprising salary within the range $74,726 - $88,109 plus 17% superannuation - retirement benefits). The Fellowships include an annual research expenses budget of $20,000.
The University will support an application for an Australian resident visa that includes medicare coverage, additional private medical insurance is available.
