Spectacular all sky view from Yarragadee

Hi Everyone,
I just had to rave about the All Sky Camera that Jim Lovell got me to
install at Yarragadee. This was done last week with the help of the SLR
staff when I was there. They did all the hard work, like pulling the
cable and burying the conduit, while I attended to the VLBI antenna feed.

Look at the attached image.
It was taken a short time ago, a few hours after sunset and a few hours
before the moon comes up in Western Australia.
You can see the VLBI antenna. The lights on the left are from the VLBI
equipment hut and the other antennas at Yarragadee. You can clearly see
the Milky Way, the Southern Cross and the Pointers. There is a line
going from the left up to the region between the Pointers and the
Southern Cross. This line would be the green ranging laser operated by
the MOBLAS 5 staff.

The camera is roughly 25 metres east of the VLBI antenna, on a fence
pole. North is at the top of the image. It represents the sky you would
see if you lay on your back with the top of your head pointing north.

You can see why the Yarragadee site is so good for satellite laser
ranging because the sky is really clear.

The Katherine site also has an All Sky Camera, although the sky there is
not normally as clear. You can make out the Southern Cross there as well
this evening. Maybe the moon coming up later will wash it out.

Hobart will get an All Sky camera in the coming weeks.

You can get live updates of the AuScope web cameras from:

I reckon it is pretty impressive. Thanks to the Yarragadee staff, Martin
at Katherine, Jamie McCallum and Jim.

Regards,
Brett
