Industry Opportunities Register Updated

A new version of the ASKAP Industry Opportunities Register is now available. The changes incorporated into this version (v3.0) include:

  • Rebranding from 'auSKA' to 'anzSKA' following the recent signing of an arrangement between Australia and New Zealand to work together on a joint bid for the SKA.
  • Changes to the timing of RFTs for focal plant arrays (pp 11-14), beamformers (pp 17-18), correlator (pp 20-22), optical fibre link (p 33) and computing (p 35).

You're Invited to Attend SKA2010

The SKA Project Development Office invites you to attend SKA2010, an international SKA science and engineering meeting, to be held in Manchester, UK, from 22 to 25 March 2010.

SKA2010 will have a strong focus on system and sub-system engineering decisions, and design/science trade-off issues. The results of these discussions are likely to have substantial impact on the technical direction and procurement needs of the international project.

Senior level engineers, technologists and project managers (max. two delegates per organisation) are encouraged to attend the full program of talks to assess the technical needs of the project, their potential engagement, and to contribute an industry perspective.

Trade exhibition booths won’t be available, but there will be space for technically relevant posters and plenty of opportunity for delegates to network. Firms interested in sponsoring organised networking events, such as end-of-day refreshments, should contact Jo Bowler.

Note that SKA2010 is separate to the international SKA Forum that will take place in June 2010. Australia's involvement in the SKA Forum 2010 will be coordinated by the Australian Government's Department of Innovation, Industry and Science and Research, and more details will be available closer to the event.

CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science Formed

On 1 December 2009 a new Division within CSIRO – CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science – was formally created.

The new Division brings together CSIRO's radio astronomy capabilities (through the Australia Telescope National Facility), NASA Operations (including the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex), CSIRO Space Sciences and Technology and the Boeing Advisor. The enlarged business unit will encompass radio astronomy, space science coordination, advanced aerospace business development, and national/international facilities management.

What is ASKAP?

The Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) will be a next-generation radio telescope located in the Mid West region of Western Australia. Made up of 36 antennas, it will enable astronomers to answer questions such as how galaxies form and evolve. It will also demonstrate new technologies that could be used in the future Square Kilometre Array radio telescope project. ASKAP is led by the CSIRO in collaboration with other Australian and international colleagues.

What is the SKA?

A global, mega-science project, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will be the world's most powerful centimetre-wave radio telescope. It will consist of a vast array of antennas spread across large distances and will be used to explore the origins of the Universe. Australia and New Zealand, along with Southern Africa, have been shortlisted as possible locations for the SKA. A decision on its location is expected in 2012.
