VACANCY - Electronics Technician

The Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF) is a Division of CSIRO and is AustraliaÂ’s premier radio astronomy research organisation. The Australia Telescope consists of an interferometer array of six 22 metre antennae near Narrabri, NSW, another 22m antenna at Mopra (near Coonabarabran), and a 64m antenna near Parkes. The ATNF is currently leading the development and construction of the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP), a next generation radio astronomy facility to be built in Western Australia. ASKAP is a $100 million interferometer composed of 45 12-metre dishes using Focal Plane Arrays. This development is being undertaken primarily at its Sydney headquarters.

The ATNF has an opportunity for a highly motivated and enthusiastic electronics technician to join its team at the ATNF Paul Wild Observatory, near Narrabri. The successful applicant will work as part of a small technical team responsible for operational support, maintenance and commissioning on Telescope systems at all three observatories, to ensure a high level of reliability. The Telescope systems supported comprise a diverse range of electronics instrumentation and support equipment including leading edge cryogenically cooled receivers from 1.2 to 115GHz, conversion, analogue and digital electronics as well as high speed optical fibre. As the successful applicant you will also assist in maintaining a highly specialised Electronics laboratory.

Applicants must hold a TAFE Certificate, Associate Diploma or equivalent in electronics, with emphasis on both analogue and digital techniques. Familiarity with small-scale electronic design and assembly techniques, and experience in an operational and support role would be advantageous.
