Phil Edwards (CASS/ATNF)

Japanese for Astronomers - Phil Edwards Colloquium

The Australia Telescope National Facility Colloquium
15:30-16:30 Wed 27 Oct 2010

ATNF Marsfield Lecture Theatre

Abstract

This talk will give a brief introduction to the Japanese language generally, focussing on the (relatively simple) pronunciation.
Japanese names, and the honorific suffixes used when addressing or referring to someone by name in Japanese, will be outlined.
An overview of the writing scripts will be presented, and the Japanese calendar system explained.
Finally, a number of Japanese astronomical facilities will be described.
The talk is open to anyone who is interested (not just astronomers) and is intended to provide sufficient background to
avoid putting your "ashi" in your "kuchi"!
