VACANCY - Unix Computer Support

The Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF) is AustraliaÂ’s premier radio astronomy research organisation, the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere and a leader in international radio astronomy. We seek a strongly motivated individual with sound experience who has well developed initiative, problem solving and customer service skills to provide computing support to the ATNF. The ATNF has a rich computing environment including specialized equipment and a high bandwidth (1Gbit/s) wide-area network.

The Australia Telescope consists of an interferometer array of six 22-metre diameter antennas near Narrabri, another 22-metre antenna at Mopra (near Coonabarabran) and the 64-metre antenna near Parkes (“The Dish”). The ATNF is also designing and building the Australia Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) instrument to be located in Western Australia with a smaller facility in New South Wales. The ATNF headquarters is located in the Sydney suburb of Marsfield.

The position is located at Marsfield, where the working environment is stimulating and provides opportunities for interaction with a diverse customer group including astronomers and engineers working on both the current facilities and on the design and construction of new generation instruments. As the successful appointee, you will be a member of the Computing Infrastructure Group providing front-line support to users of the National Facility as well as CSIRO staff, visitors and students. You will play an active role in UNIX system administration. Some travel to the observatories will be required. You will have a recognised degree in computing or equivalent technical experience.
