Colouring the Galactic Plane
by Ron Ekers & Jan Högbom
This photo, taken at CSIRO's Parkes Observatory circa 1965, shows scientists take their colouring in seriously. In the photo, astronomer Jan Högbom and assistants carefully colour in an early survey of the Galactic Plane. According to Jan (inventor of the CLEAN algorithm and co-author of the classic publication, Radiotelescopes), he used to cut out measured profiles in white paper and photograph them one after the other behind a glass rod, making intensity strips that combined together to form an early radiograph.
