MAGMA: The Magellanic Mopra Assessment
by Tony Wong (University of Illinois)
MAGMA is a CO mapping survey of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds using the 22-m Mopra Telescope of the Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF). Observations were conducted in 2005-2010 with additional data from 2012-2013 soon to be incorporated. Regions for mapping were selected based on the earlier NANTEN surveys. MAGMA has provided new insights into how molecular cloud populations differ among galaxies, and has been widely used for comparison with images at other wavelengths and for planning observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). More information can be found at the link above.

The LMC color-composite image is composed of the MAGMA CO intensity image (in green) overlaid on an ATCA HI intensity image (in red) and the Magellanic Cloud Emission Line Survey MCELS Hα image (in blue).
