Life-cycle of gas in galaxies: A Local Perspective |
by Tom Oosterloo (ASTRON) |
This week, about 100 astronomers gather in
Dwingeloo, the Netherlands, to discuss the latest results from studies of
the atomic hydrogen gas in nearby galaxies. Gas is a crucial component of
galaxies and it is impossible to understand the structure and evolution of
galaxies without knowing their gas properties. This meeting is timely because the SKA pathfinders, such as Apertif, ASKAP and MeerKat, will cause a breakthrough in our understandig of the cold gas properties of galaxies, from detailed imaging of nearby galaxies as well as a complete census of the overall HI properties in the local Universe. A big thanks to Betsey Adams (ASTRON) for doing almost all the work for the meeting. |
