Pulsar caught switching on and off
by George Hobbs (CASS)
The recent PULSE@Parkes session at the Geraldton science fair allowed us to obtain a large number of pulsar observations. To the delight of the students and their teachers, many of the pulsars were observed as they underwent interesting events. For instance, we managed to catch PSR J1107-5907 switch from a weak emission state into a strong state (see the central panel in the picture to see that the pulsar switched into the bright state about 7 minutes after the start of the observation; the top panel shows the pulse profile averaged across the entire observation) and then later it seemed to switch completely off. This is the same pulsar that was recently observed to switch into its bright emission state using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder telescope (ASKAP).
