PULSE@Parkes in South Africa |
Through the
PULSE@Parkes
program, high school students take control of
the Parkes radio telescope to observe pulsars under the guidance of
professional astronomers. Students may discover a new pulsar, identify
unusual ones or detect sudden glitches in their rotation. The data
collected is added to a growing database of results and is used by
astronomers for ongoing research.
George Hobbs and Robert Hollow recently spent a week in Cape Town running a series of PULSE@Parkes observing sessions and pulsar science workshops, and visiting the SKA South Africa offices. At the Cape Town Science Centre where they ran a PULSE@Parkes session for 26 Year 10 students from Manzomthombo High School. After this the Science Centre staff had an opportunity to observe pulsars with Parkes, then George answered their astronomy questions. |
