Phased Array Feeds on show
CSIRO's Phased Array Feed (PAF) technology will go on show at the Adelaide Convention Centre as part of the International Astronautical Congress 2017 from September 25 to 29. PAFs were originally created for the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope in Western Australia (pictured above), and a PAF has been built for the 100m Effelsberg telescope near Bonn. Effelsberg, operated by the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy (MPIfR), received a customised version of the feed and installed the PAF for commissioning earlier this year. The Effelsberg-bound PAF was tested on the Parkes telescope for six months before being shipped, and CSIRO is developing another phased-array feed for Parkes, one cooled to low temperatures to increase its performance.
