Figure 1: Giant Interacting Galaxies NGC 6872/IC 4970. A three-colour composite, reproduced from one blue (B), one green-yellow (V) and one red (R) exposure, obtained with FORS1 at ANTU in the morning of March 29, 1999. The field size is 6.8 arcmin x 6.8 arcmin. North is to the upper right and East is to the upper left. For details see ESO Press Photos.

Figures 2-4: Neutral hydrogen distribution (top, middle) and mean velocity field (bottom) of the galaxy NGC 6872 and its companion IC 4970 as obtained with four configurations (see below) of the ATCA. Summary of map parameters. INVERT: cell=4; imsize=300; robust=0.5; offset=-180,180; options=systemp; line=velocity,70,4050,20,20; select=-ant(6); slop=1,interpolate. CLEAN: gain=0.1; niters=100; cutoff=0.003. MOMENT: clip=0.003. The data needed lots of flagging. The synthesised beam (42.4"x38.8") is displayed at the bottom left.
