Title:Follow up of 1740-3052

Paper description: updated timing solution with omdot and xdot. DM variations with orbital phase; B-star wind model and estimate of system inclination angle. Implications for misalignment of B-star spin and SN kicks. Gemini/VLT spectroscopy of coincident late-type star, hopefully with negative result (might break this topic into a separate letter).

Status: still reducing spectroscopy data and improving timing models; draft will be based on Crete and IAU conf. proceedings.

Title:The Ecliping Binary Pulsar J1638-4725

Paper description: PSR J1638-4725 is a 764-ms pulsar in a binary system with long orbital period and high-mass companion. We detect large changes in dispersion and scattering measure of this pulsar as its radio emission interacts with the stellar wind from its high-mass (probably Be-star) companion. In fact, radio emission is completely undetectable from this pulsar for several weeks around periastron. We describe these effects and use them to constrain the composition and kinematics of the stellar and pulsar winds and the geometry of the binary system.

Title:Millisecond pulsars from PM reprocessing and the MSP population

Paper description: PSR J1439-54 is a 28-ms pulsar in a 2.1 day orbit with a relatively massive companion. The low DM implies strong scintillation, but after collecting enough statistics an eclipse around superior conjunction seems probable. If confirmed, this could be a brother (but in the Galactic Disk) of PSR J1740-5340 in GC. We discuss this and other possibilities. PSR J1841+01 is a 29-ms pulsar in a 10.5 day orbit. PSR J1726-29 is a 27-ms solitary pulsar. We present a compendium of the current MSP sample and form a simple model of the of the population.

Status: timing completed. Andrea/Dunc now working on population model. It is possible that two papers could result from this instead of just one?

Title:Searching the multibeam data for long-period pulsars

Paper description: This paper is essentially looking at the particular aspects of long period searches, i.e. implementation, success, examples. It will be coordinated with Andy's reaper paper which will discuss the long period search in not great detail.

Title:Observations and Modelling of the Geodetic Precession in J1141-6545

Paper description: Reporting on pulse shape and polarization changes and precessional model and a beam model. Paper now well advanced.

Discussion

1. Message from Vicky: Re timing noise, what Maggie and I had in mind was not only looking at radio pulsar timing noise, but to compare it quantitatively also with magnetars using our long-term X-ray monitoring data set, for which we have good quality residuals over 3-8 yr, depending on the source. So, I could imagine us splitting this project into e.g. two papers, one lead by George which focuses on the radio sources, and one lead by Maggie which combines the radio results with those from the X-ray data set.
