A Radio-quiet Zone for the Square Kilometre Array telescope

A radio-quiet zone for the SKA will provide a means to maintain low levels of radio-frequency emissions in the vicinity of the SKA.

The ACMA has released a draft discussion paper on a Radio Quiet Zone in Western Australia for public comment.

In March 2006 the Western Australian Government announced that measures were in place to establish a radio astronomy park and radio-quiet zone at Mileura Station.

In November 2005 the International SKA Project Office released a paper on spectrum protection (pdf file).

The Australian Prime Minister’s Science, Engineering and Innovation Council (PMSEIC) Working Group on astronomy recommended the establishment of a radio-quiet zone at the representative Australian SKA site in Western Australia (June 2004).

The 2003 OECD Global Science Forum Task Force on Radio Astronomy and the Radio Spectrum in their report (pdf, size 1.7 MB) suggested the establishment of “controlled emission zones” around one or more future radio astronomical observatory sites.  Such facilities will be remote and small in number.
