The annual ATNF student symposium is being held on May 28th, 2010 at the ATNF Headquarters, Sydney.
The symposium began in 1998 and was originally designed to allow higher degree students the opportunity to present their research to fellow students and staff.
The idea of the symposium is to provide an informal atmosphere where ATNF affiliated students can present their work and allow ATNF staff and visitors to be informed of current research. There are a number of ways students can present their work:
•A thesis outline (for people commencing in 2010);
•discussion of global results;
•discussion of an interesting specific result;
•present a problem encountered in your research and initiate a discussion with the audience.
This last option was in fact used by a number of students in '98 who wished to discuss discoveries and problems with a wider group. Students are most welcome to present in this manner as discussion periods are extremely useful. Should anyone wish to include a discussion in their presentation, please email the organisers so extra time may be arranged. Presentation of poster is also encouraged. We will have room outside the lecture theatre for posters. We will also allow extra time during morning/afternoon tea for poster viewing. There will be prizes for outstanding talks and posters. The list of abstracts is available here.
Attendance is open to all students, staff and visitors of ATNF. Students are invited to submit a short abstract for a 15-20 min talk. All students are strongly encouraged to utilise this opportunity to obtain feedback on their research and it is expected by the ATNF that students will attend. It is important to note that these are not formal talks, but rather an opportunity for students to gain experience at public speaking and to provide staff the opportunity to see some of the excellent research being under taken by ATNF students.
Interstate students are particularly encouraged to present their work and teleconference facilities will be available for those that can not present in person. Please click here here for the symposium program.
Facilities
The Symposium will take place in the lecture theatre at ATNF's Marsfield headquarters in Sydney. Presenters are strongly encouraged to give powerpoint presentations using the ATNF hypermail system or bring their own laptops (please test presentation well before your talk). Further information on the use of the hypermail system will be provided to presenters closer to the day. People wishing to show non-standard movies or graphics which can not be embedded in powerpoint must arrange with the organisers or other suitable people to do an equipments test in the week before the meeting:- after all you don't want to be caught in the embarrassing situation where you turn up for your talk only to discover the computer will not work or we don't have the right sort of connector. Further information with respect to this can be obtained from the organisers.
For those unable to attend in person, tele- and/or video-conferencing can be arranged. A teleconference number will be provided.
Meals
As part of the program a lunch will be provided as well as morning tea for all participants. There will be vegetarian options.
Accommodation
Accommodation is the responsibility of the participant. Some accommodation has been reserved for interstate ATNF Students in the Marsfield Lodge, however as always students should be aware that the lodge capacity is limited and operates on a first come first served basis. Lodge accommodation can be booked via the online form, with reason to visit being the symposium. Further information regarding accommodation bookings for the Marsfield Lodge can be obtained from Vicki Drazenovic or Samantha Barry. Information on nearby accommodation is available here. The best (and least expensive option) would be the student colleges.
Registration
For catering & equipment purposes, all people wishing to attend are asked to register by May 7th, 2010. If you wish you present, please include a short abstract of your representation with your registration. Please send this via email to atnfss2010@gmail.com.
