undergraduate courses of three years or more in Astrophysics, Physics, Mathematics,
Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or closely related subjects.
Closing date for applications: Sunday 30 August 2009
The Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF) is the premier
radio astronomical facility in Australia and operates world-class radio astronomy
observatories at Parkes and Narrabri, with headquarters in Sydney. Research
projects offered for the 2009 summer vacation program will be in the areas of
Astrophysics, Computing, Engineering and Education. Placements will be in Sydney
at the ATNF headquarters at Marsfield except for the Education/Outreach project which is based at the Parkes Observatory.
Scholarships will be available for 10 working weeks starting
Monday 30 November 2009 until Friday 12 February 2010 (excludes Christmas - New
Year week). All students are expected to be present in Sydney at the start of
the program and to be available to work between these dates. The stipend is
$550 a week which is subject to tax. Each student will undertake a research
project under the supervision of a research scientist, engineer or outreach/education leader. The program
also includes an observing trip of several days at the Australia Telescope Compact
Array near Narrabri where students will work in small teams and use the radio
telescope to take observations for their own projects. Students will be selected
according to their interests and the project needs of the supervisor taking
into account academic merit and comments from referees.
Research Projects
Each student will undertake a research project
under the supervision of an ATNF staff member. There is a range of projects available
for the 2009 Program. Details of projects are available on the Projects
page. You must select up to three projects from these and list them in order
of preference on your online application.
Location
The ATNF Headquarters is located at the Radiophysics
Laboratory in Marsfield, 20 km north-west of the city centre and close to Macquarie
University. The Australia Telescope Compact Array is located at the Paul Wild
Observatory, 20 km west of Narrabri in north-western NSW. The Parkes Observatory is 26 km north of Parkes in the Central West of NSW,
Accommodation
Accommodation costs are paid for by the students. We can arrange reasonably-priced
