HIPASS legacy data set now available through ASKAP’s new archive facility

The CASDA team is pleased to announce that HIPASS cubes are now available in the CSIRO ASKAP Science Data Archive (CASDA).

CASDA is a collaboration between CASS, CSIRO IM&T, and the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre, to build a data archive for the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). It will provide long term storage for Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) data products, and the hardware and software facilities that enable astronomers to access the data. CASDA will store about 5 PB per year from ASKAP and serve that to astronomers around the world using both virtual observatory (VO) and web-based portal services.

A key feature of CASDA is the ability for users to upload their generated data, i.e. images, cubes and catalogues, for scientific use by the astronomical community. A legacy dataset of much interest and value to the community is the `HI Parkes All Sky Survey' (HIPASS). HIPASS covers the whole southern sky, and northern declinations to +25 deg. HIPASS commenced in Feb 1997, and the last northern scans were taken in 2002. HIPASS was carried out with the Australia Telescope National Facility's Parkes 64-m telescope equipped with a novel 21-cm multibeam system.

To facilitate the use of this HIPASS data, its combination with ASKAP data, and to test the CASDA features, we have made HIPASS available in CASDA. This CASDA data release comprises all 538 HIPASS cubes.

You can access the HIPASS collection here:

Please refer to the readme file attached to the collection for more detailed information on the HIPASS data in this collection.

ASKAP is currently in the early science and commissioning phase. Early science data on NGC7232 is currently released through CASDA (see links below) and we expect many more datasets to become available as ASKAP moves to full operations.
