David Malin worked for 26 years at the Anglo-Australian Observatory as photographic scientist and astronomer. Over his career he invented new ways of revealing information on astronomical plates, earning an international reputation. The NSW Central West Astronomical Society holds an annual astrophotography competition, the David Malin Awards, with the winning entries being announced recently. Entries were judged by a panel consisting of Selena Simpson, Alex Cherney, and Peter Ward. A highly commended entry in the Deep Sky category was the image above by Jarrod Rueff, entitled Markarian’s Chain. Markarian’s Chain is a group of galaxies located within the Virgo Cluster, roughly 50 to 60 million light-years from our Galaxy, that spans about 1.5 degrees.  M86 and M84 are the brightest galaxies on the right hand side of the image. Other prize-winners are showcased in this article.
