David Malin worked for 26 years at the Anglo-Australian Observatory as photographic scientist and astronomer. Over his career he invented new ways of revealing information on astronomical plates, earning an international reputation. The NSW Central West Astronomical Society holds an annual astrophotography competition, the David Malin Awards, with the winning entries being announced recently. Entries were judged by a panel consisting of Selena Simpson, Alex Cherney, and Peter Ward. A highly commended entry in the Smartphone Astrophotography section was the image above by Sharon Woods, entitled Echos Beneath the Aurora Australis, recalling some of the spectacular aurorae seen in the last couple of years as the Sun has been at the maximum of its 11-year magnetic activity cycle. Other prize-winners are showcased in this article.
