SUMMARY:S&A Colloquium: Kinwah Wu (University College London)
DESCRIPTION:Multi-messenger properties and astrophysics of extreme-mass-ratio systems\n\nAbstract: \n\nExtreme-mass-ratio systems (EMRSs) are an inhomogeneous collection of systems where the components have a diverse range of masses. A particular subgroup of the EMRSs\, of interest in high-energy and relativistic astrophysics\, is the extreme-mass-ratio binaries (EMRBs). In this presentation\, I will discuss two types of EMRBs: (i) a fast-spinning pulsar in close orbit around a massive black hole or in a hyperbolic scattering by a massive black hole\, and (ii) accreting massive black-hole pairs with very uneven mass ratios. These systems all emit electromagnetic waves\, i.e. they have electromagnetic counterparts. They also emit gravitational waves and could also be accelerators of energetic non-photonic particles. I will present my studies and the findings regarding these two types of EMRBs. For (i) the focus will be on the general relativistic dynamics and how we can use them to study the fundamental aspects of physics. For (ii) the focus will be on physical processes and multi-messenger signatures of uneven mass black-hole binaries that are potential targets of future LISA or pulsar-timing-array observations. \n\n \nJoin Event on Microsoft Teams\nLocation\n\nOrganiser\n\nEvent details\nDownload iCal\nCategory

SUMMARY:17th DiFX Users and Developers Meeting 2026
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\nDiFX Workshop 2026 \n\nThe 17th DiFX Users and Developers Meeting will take place 9-13 November 2026 in Perth\, Western Australia\, hosted by CSIRO. \n\nFollowing the traditional format\, a Users Meeting aimed at the broader DiFX community will take place on Monday and Tuesday. This will be followed by a Developers Meeting on Wednesday through Friday primarily aimed at those actively contributing to DiFX. The Users Meeting is a great opportunity to influence the development work that will take place during the Developers Meeting. \n\nWe are pleased to also offer a remote participation option\, the details of which will be provided upon registration. \n\nThe deadline for registration is 26 October 2026. Please register using the link below. \nRegistration\nIf you wish to make a presentation at the Users Meeting\, or would like to suggest a topic for the Developers Meeting\, please add an abstract or topic using the link below. \nAbstracts and Topic Suggestions\nLocation\n\n \n\nAccommodation\n\nAttendees should arrange their own accommodation. Please do so as early as possible to ensure availability. The venue is approximately 8 km from Perth CBD where there are many hotels and is convenient to public transport from the CBD. The Nesuto and Metro hotels are walkable (approx. 20- and 35-minutes walk respectively). \n\nTransport\n\nInformation about public transport in Perth is available from the Transperth website.
