OH masers' view of GASKAP -- Hiroshi Imai Colloquium

The Australia Telescope National Facility Colloquium
15:00-16:00 Wed 21 Nov 2012

Abstract

The SKA, in combination of the core and remote stations, will provide great opportunity for radio astrometry. In possible target sources in the SKA astrometry, interstellar and circumstellar hydroxyl (OH) maser sources are unique ones. They are expected to be widely distributed in the Milky Way Galaxy as well as the Magellanic Clouds. Preparatory studies on VLBI calibration schemes for maser source trigonometry and on maser source surveys are crucial before the vast of possibility in radio astrometry in the SKA era. The GASKAP (Galactic ASKAP Spectral Line Survey) project will be soon coming and one of the most important milestones towards OH maser astrometry. In this talk, I will discuss the potential of OH maser study in SKA and GASKAP, and introduce the current activity in GASKAP, especially my own source finding simulations and their preliminary results.
