New Technologies for Astronomical Visualization -- Amit Kapadia Colloquium

Abstract

Observatories are producing rich data at an increased pace, but, due to size and dimensionality, these data are often difficult and overwhelming to explore. Ranging from complex images and volumes to multi-dimensional tables, new methodologies and tools are needed for exploration of these data. Using emerging technologies supported by the wider community, new visualization solutions may be developed to address the wide gamut of astronomical data. The browser is quickly transforming into a robust platform that offers interactive and collaborative solutions. This talk will demonstrate the browser as a tool for science, demonstrating various astronomical datasets, including volumetric renderings of data cubes.
