What do you mean by observing and non-observing schools?

Schools can apply for one of the observing slots so that their students can actually control the Parkes radio telescope remotely over the Internet. They then obtain data for several pulsars in a typical two-hour session. Students commence data analysis during this session but can also access the data from the website later and complete their analysis later at school or home. As there is only a limited number of slots available for schools to use the telescope in any six-month observing semester many schools may be unable to obtain a slot. Whilst the PULSE@Parkes is designed around a remote observing experience the bulk of the online project materials may be used by anyone regardless of whether they have been allocated an observing session or not.

Non-observing schools may still work through the online project materials, access the data obtained by observing schools and conduct analysis of the data.
