The giant radio galaxy J0116-473

Giant plumes of radio emitting synchrotron plasma created by beams from a black hole at the centre of an elliptical galaxy. The radio lobes of this radio galaxy are exceptionally large and extend three million light years from the centre. The Australia Telescope image has caught this giant radio galaxy in the act of rejuvenation: the beams from the black hole stopped and restarted and the new beams are seen to form a pair of inner lobes.
