Conclusions

With the use of optical spectropolarimetry on a well-defined sample of AGN, it has been demonstrated that the detectability of polarised broad lines depends upon FIR colours in a manner which can be understood within the context of the unified model for AGN. Emphasis is placed on the importance of sample selection when investigating properties of AGN, particularly in light of the evidence for a geometrically thick torus which is opaque to tex2html_wrap_inline734 50 tex2html_wrap_inline504m.

The importance of evolution of AGN, has been supported by observational evidence which strongly suggests that some types of AGN (in particular ``radio-excess" Seyferts and 60 tex2html_wrap_inline504m Peakers) represent the precursors to radio-loud AGN.
