About Me

• Personal Information

My name is Ioannis Gonidakis (I prefer to be called Yiannis) and I was born in Athens, Greece. I live and work in Sydney, Australia.

• Education

In 2000 I was accepted for a PhD in Astrophysics at the University of Manchester in England, UK. The subject of my PhD research was "The 43 GHz SiO Maser Around the Mira Variable TX Cam", under the supervision of Prof. Phil Diamond at Jodrell Bank Observatory.
In 1995, I was accepted for a BSc in Physics at the National and Kapodestrian University of Athens at the Faculty of Physics. On the third year of my studies, I focused on subjects of Astrophysics at the Department of Mechanics, Astronomy and Astrophysics. My Dissertation was a "Study of the interstellar medium through satellite observations".

• Employment

As of the 1st of August 2011, I am working as a Post Doctoral Fellow in High Resolution Science at CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science, based in Marsfield, Sydney. My research is focused on VLBI observations of several transitional and rotational levels of SiO Masers, mainly in AGB stars.
Previously, I worked as a PostDoctoral Researcher in Extragalactic Astronomy at the University of Athens, Greece with Dr. Mary Kontizas. My research was focused on stellar populations in neighbouring galaxies, especially on the morphology, distribution and activity of stellar complexes in the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds. More specifically, I studied large structures of star-formation regions and their impact on galaxy's star formation and evolution, according to their stellar populations in several wavelengths.

• Other Interests

I like everything that has to do with space and flying so, I have a keen interest in Aviation and Aeronautics and I follow closely the latest developments in manned space flight.
