ASKAC Open Meeting

Tuesday 5 November 2002

A symposium held in conjunction with
the Australian SKA Consortium Committee meeting

Marsfield Laboratory, ATNF, CSIRO, Epping

Australian SKA - MNRF2 and Beyond

This symposium will precede a meeting of the Australian SKA Consortium Committee members on Wednesday 6 November. Everyone is welcome to attend the symposium but, owing to space and catering restrictions, we may have to impose some attendance limits if interest is very high. Please register early if you would like to attend.

This open symposium is to discuss what strategies Australian Astronomical community should adopt regarding the SKA demonstrator projects and their associated technological developments. There are two issues:

  1. What is the Australian Astronomical community's view on the frequency range of the SKA - is there really a pair of polarised "must do low frequency" vs "must do high resolution, high frequency" camps ? Can we recommend a any compromise or are astronomers specifying 2 very different SKA's ?
  2. What is the Australian Astronomical community's view on the SKA demonstrator projects regarding scientific vs technological payback ? Do we demand short-term defined science goals or will it accept a longer-term view of the demonstrators being technology-driven ? If short-term science, then what do we do and who leads it ? If the latter, then how much support is required from the astronomical community ?
