Commemorating ATCA construction |
The
CSIRO Space and Astronomy Radio School is being held this
week at the Paul Wild Observatory near Narrabri, the site of the
Australia Telescope Compact Array, on Gomeroi Country.
Yesterday marked the 39th anniversary of the commencement of
construction of the array, which was commemorated with the plaque above.
The circle at left represents the
Culgoora Radioheliograph,
and shows the paths of the
transmission lines that brought
the signals from the 96 antennas to the central control building.
The circle at the right is the back view of an ATCA antenna.
In the middle is da Vinci's iconic Vitruvian Man,
in two superimposed positions that are inscribed in both a circle and square.
Barry Jones, Minister for Science at the time, is also a writer, lawyer, and quiz champion
who is on the National Trust's list of Australian Living Treasures.
