Welcome... Welcome to the web site of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA)
Engineering and Management Team (EMT). The formation of this group flowed from the recommendations of the SKA Five Year Plan discussion convened as part of the 2000 SKA Workshop (Technology Pathways to the Square Kilometer Array)
held at Jodrell Bank. The EMT will act on behalf of the International SKA Steering Committee (ISSC) in managing the technical and planning
aspects of the SKA project. To assist in this function a number of international specialist working groups will soon be set up.
There are many potential pathways to an operational SKA. Research and development activities are underway at several international centres. Solutions under study include adaptive
array technology, "smart" antennas, large arrays of low-cost parabolic antennas, and novel concepts for very large, single-aperture antennas. Plans are well developed for
construction of different prototype telescopes within the next few years. The EMT will help in finding synergies between the many different concepts being explored. Finally, the EMT will
evaluate the various concepts being explored with a view to establishing which combinations of them provide the best balance between performance and cost. This process should
be well advanced by the middle of this decade. |
