ASKAP Update No 8
Commissioning activities with the first six antennas of CSIRO's Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP), installed with first-generation phased array feed (PAF) receivers, have already achieved significant initial scientific results that are `proof of concept' for ASKAP and lay the groundwork for some of the ten Survey Science Projects (SSPs). - The image above (made by Paolo Serra) shows the nearby IC1459 galaxy group observed with nine beams of the early ASKAP Boolardy Engineering Test Array. The detected HI emission (contours) is shown overlaid onto an optical image; for more details see Serra, Koribalski, Kilborn et al. (2015, MNRAS 452, 2680).
