Our space and astronomy research enables humanity to better understand the Earth and Universe. It contributes to solving the greatest challenges and building future industry.
We aim to support and foster great talent, as our people enable us to provide the best astronomical facilities to the world.
The ATNF is operated and managed by CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, within CSIRO’s Space and Astronomy research unit.
Careers
At CSIRO, we provide a supportive environment where our team members flourish and thrive. With our generous leave entitlements, flexible working conditions and development opportunities, joining Team CSIRO is a great move, both professionally and personally.
Roles within the ATNF are listed on the CSIRO jobs hub.
Around 300 people are employed by Space and Astronomy, of which approximately 200 people work primarily with the ATNF. This includes research scientists, engineers, technical and administrative support staff.
Student programs
We build innovation capacity for Australia and inspire the next generation. We achieve this through our programs for students and teachers, and the stories of our people, infrastructure, and the excellent science we enable and how this delivers benefit for Australia.
There are multiple ways we work with students:
- An extensive program co-supervising postgraduate students; PhDs, Masters and some Honours. Most are enrolled in Australian universities but some are international.
- Undergraduate Studentships over the summer as part of the wider CSIRO scheme.
- PULSE@Parkes, a free education program where high school students use Murriyang, our Parkes radio telescope to observe pulsars, analyse data and engage with professional astronomers.
- CSIRO has other programs for school students provided by CSIRO Education and Outreach, including work experience.
