Visualising Galaxy Warps
by Tim Dykes (University of Portsmouth)
Tim Dykes, Ph.D. student from the University of Portsmouth, is visiting CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science (CASS) for four weeks to work on 3D visualisation of galaxies with Bärbel Koribalski, enhancing the ray tracing software splotch with a modified radiative transfer function to visualise dust in galaxies. As part of the visualisation process, he is using models generated by tilted ring fitting code (TiRiFiC), developed by Gyula Jozsa et al, and wrote a simple python script to visualise the 3D models - shown is M83 (modeled by Peter Kamphuis).
