An extreme scattering event caught in real time
by Keith Bannister (CASS)
These two panels show the multi-frequency light curve (top) and corresponding dynamic spectrum (bottom) of an Extreme Scattering Event, detected by the ATCA in 2014, and reported in Science (Bannister et al. 2016). The data comprise 104 spectra obtained over about 1 year with approximately 3 day sampling. With these data, and complementary VLBI data, we were able to rule out a number of ESE models, and compute a 1D cut through the electron column density.
