"Connections" Light Artwork at Vivid Sydney 2017
by Aly & Balt Indermuehle (CASS)
Connections visualises the transmission and reception of radio waves generated by our mobile devices. Whether it's a phone call, a text message, an email, a push, a tag, a pin, or some other kind of a personal message, they all have one thing in common: they connect us via invisible radio waves. Connections listens to and decodes 4G/LTE data traffic and captures it for the viewer on a series of light columns. The decoded baseband of the 4G signal is run through a fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm to visualise the frequency and time domain of data volumes being transmitted. The higher the data volume of the traffic on the radio waves, the brighter the colours appear on the columns. As time passes these coloured points, representing tiny slices of information being sent and received, slide down the sides of the columns like a waterfall, only to disappear and never return. For one fleeting moment in time, we capture a representation of the sheer quantity of information that is surrounding us at all times as a beautiful side product of our connected society. - Click the image to view the animation.
