Three antennas of the ATCA close to sunset, during the 2026 ATNF Radio School.

The ATNF Radio School 2026 is an immersive training program designed for PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and early career astronomers who want to build solid foundations in radio interferometry and hands-on data skills. Held on-site at the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) on Gomeroi Country, near Narrabri, NSW, this year’s school blends core theory with practical calibration and imaging tutorials. On-line participation is also available. In addition to lectures covering radio astronomy theory and practice, students were able select from a range of tutorials, including an ATCA antenna tour, hands-on ATCA observing, continuum data reduction, spectral line observing, VLBI data reduction, error recognition, polarisation analysis, advanced imaging and self-calibration, communicating astronomy, and proposal writing. The image above shows three of the ATCA’s six antennas just before sunset.
