ASKAP's renewable energy
by Brett Hiscock (CASS)
The first stage of the new power station for the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory (MRO) is now operational. Constructed by Horizon Power and EMC Solar Construction, stage 1 comprises four diesel generators and this 250 kW solar array. The power station is set to have a major renewable expansion when a 1.6 MW array (over 5000 solar panels) and one of Australia's largest lithium-ion battery storage systems comes on line next year. CSIRO is constructing renewable energy solutions for the MRO through the Sustainable Energy for the SKA (SESKA) project, which is an initiative of the Australian Government being conducted as part of the Education Investment Fund.
