The Quito Astronomical Observatory
(Observatorio Astronomico de Quito in Spanish) is located in the Historic
Centre of Quito. The observatory was founded in 1873 and it is the third
oldest astronomical observatory in South America. Over the years the
observatory was the birthplace of astronomy, geography, meteorology and
seismology in Ecuador. In 1963, Escuela Politecnica Nacional took over the
management of the observatory. Currently, the observatory is the home of
an astronomical museum and the Astronomy Department of Escuela Politecnica
Nacional. Research topics at this observatory range from space weather to
high-energy astrophysics. - Photo credit: OAQ-EPN
