Star Wars at Gemini South
by Manuel Paredes (Gemini) and Juan Madrid (CASS)
Gemini South fires the laser of its Adaptive Optics system into the sky. This laser bounces back from the upper layers of atmosphere and it is used to improve the quality of astronomical images by accounting and removing the effects of atmospheric distortion. The Magellanic clouds are clearly visible on the left hand side of the image.

Gemini South is located in Chile and is frequently used by CSIRO staff and other Australian astronomers for their scientific research. This image is part of a series of photographs recently published by Manuel Paredes, Gemini South Communications Coordinator. The entire collection of his stunning images titled, "Mas Alla de las Estrellas" (Beyond the Stars).
