We were saddened to learn of the passing of Nikolai Kardashev on August 3rd.
Deputy Director of the Astro Space Center of PN Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences,
Kardashev made significant contributions to a number of fields of astronomy.
His most highly cited paper is
"Nonstationarity of Spectra of Young Sources of Nonthermal Radio Emission"
which examined the various processes of energy losses by relativistc electrons and the
resulting impact on the continuum spctra of radio sources.
He is also known for his
contributions to SETI research,
including the setting out of what is now known as the Kardashev Scale, a categorisation of
the technical advancement of civilizations.
Finally, for many years Kardashev led the RadioAstron space VLBI mission, summarised
in the 2013 paper
"RadioAstron -- A telescope with a size of 300 000 km: Main parameters and first observational results".
CSIRO contributed the 20cm receiver to the RadioAstron spacecraft, and ATNF telescopes
co-observed in a number of RadioAstron observations.
