The roles of Parkes and Honeysuckle Creek in the Apollo 11
moon-landing were commemorated with the unveiling of IEEE (Institute
of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Milestone Award at Parkes
last week. The plaque reads "Parkes radiotelescope and Honeysuckle
Creek stations in Australia received voice and video signals from the
Apollo 11 moonwalk, which were redistributed to millions of
viewers. Parkes' televised images were superior to other ground
stations, and NASA used them for much of the broadcast. One of the
first to use the newly developed corrugated feed horn, Parkes became
the model for the NASA Deep Space Network large aperture antennas."
The IEEE Milestones program honors significant technical achievements
in all areas associated with IEEE. IEEE established the Milestones
Program in 1983 and
now more than
200 IEEE Milestones have been approved and dedicated around the
world, with this being the first one in Australia. (Image credit:
