Students from the Pia Wadjarri Remote Community School recently made
their annual visit to the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory,
stopping for a group photo in front of an antenna. Using handheld
transistor radios the students observed RFI (radio frequency
interference) from equipment inside the control building, then
compared it with the lack of RFI outside. The following day the CASS
team -- Chenoa, Jane and Rob -- spent the day at the school, following
up the previous day’s RFI sleuthing by mapping out sources of RFI in
the classroom and the school grounds. Chenoa and Jane talked about
their pathways into astronomy and what their work entails. The day
ended with the students launching rockets powered by water and alka
seltzer tablets: a cooling demonstration of chemistry and rocketry in
action.
