The Parkes 64m radiotelescope was opened on October 31st, 1961,
which is the same year
the song Twist and Shout was written by Phil Medley and Bert Berns.
It was originally recorded by the Top Notes in 1961, then the
Isley Brothers in 1962, before being recorded by the Beatles in
1963 (before their tour of Australia in 1964).
The Parkes telescope moves in both azimuth and elevation to
track sources as they move across the sky, and careful design
was required to ensure cables do not become tangled or stretched
as the telescope moves. This is accomplished by use of
the "twister" shown in the image above.
